Welcome to the How To Page

This page tells parents how to start a Scout working on a Religious Emblem, how to nominate an adult for recognition and how to obtain training to work with Scouts on emblems.

Start a Scout Working on a Religious Emblem

A Scout is reverent, and we are glad that you and your Catholic Scout want to continue their growth in the Catholic faith by working on a Religious Emblem program. There are a number of Catholic religious emblems available for boys and girls participating in scouting. All Scouts desiring to work towards one of the programs must meet the following general requirements: baptized Roman Catholic (of any Latin or Eastern Rite), attending Catholic school or enrolled in the parish RE program, and active in Scouting a minimum of six month (Tiger Cubs and Daisies excepted).

The procedures are simple: Send the appropriate order form and $7.00 per Scout for the particular emblem to:
Ted Zagrobelny
12310 Beechnut Court
Woodbridge VA 22192

For Tiger Cubs and Daisies use this link to the Guardian Angel Program.

Some groups will order the books for a group of five, ten, twenty, or more. Others leave it up to the individual parents. It’s your choice. Checks should be made out to CCOS (Catholic Committee on Scouting). After the program is completed, fill out the completion sheet, get the appropriate signatures, and sent the sheet back to Ted. Then he'll send you the medal for presentation to the Scout. The awards for the highest levels in Boy Scouting (Ad Altare Dei and Pius XII) require a formal Board of Review after the work is done. This requirement applies to Girl Scouts completing the Mary, The First Disciple and the Spirit Alive religious emblem programs. We also require that a trained religious emblem counselor lead these higher level awards. Contact Mark Hansen for further details on counselor availability or training opportunities.

The emblem can be presented at a mass on Scout Sunday, a school mass for those at a parochial school or a weekend parish mass. The annual Diocesan Scout mass is celebrated in February. Bishop Loverde, the main celebrant for the mass, encourages all Scouts to attend and looks forward to greeting and congratulating each of you on your work. Great photo op with His Excellency.

Nominate an Adult for recognition

The Nominations Standing Committee requires nominating letters by September 1 in the year the bishop presents the emblem.

Become A Religious Emblems Coordinator/Counselor/Moderator/Facilitator

Scouts in each program level need Catholic men and women to share their faith with them. All activities accomplish this, but it manifests itself primarily in the religious emblems programs. These programs afford Catholic Scouters opportunities to work directly with Scouts or mentor other Scouters who work with the youth. Become a "counselor" and be HIS witness.
